An extraordinary situation recently took place at our institution, where physicians conducted follow-up examinations of two patients who had received a kidney from the same donor in Minsk. The examinations confirmed that both patients are recovering in accordance with the planned clinical course. This represents a rare case in which one donor has saved two human lives.
At the Outpatient Department for Transplant Patients within the Department of Nephrology at the Internal Medicine Clinic of the University Clinical Center of the Republic of Srpska, medical staff carried out follow-up check-ups of patients M.P. and B.M., who underwent kidney transplantation from the same donor in Minsk at the beginning of October. Both patients are stable, showing excellent kidney function, and will continue to receive regular medical monitoring at our institution.
Cadaveric transplantation involves the removal of a kidney from a brain-dead donor. Such procedures are performed only after a series of medical tests confirm brain death. It means that the brain stem which controls vital functions such as breathing has permanently ceased to function. A brain-dead donor’s vital signs are maintained solely by life-support device.
The management of the University Clinical Center of the Republic of Srpska, led by Professor Vlado Djajic, MD, PhD remains fully committed to continuous investment in advanced medical technologies, the education and professional development of our medical staff, and the exchange of expertise with leading healthcare institutions around the world.
We would like to use this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Government of the Republic of Srpska and to President Milorad Dodik for their support and for enabling cooperation with healthcare institutions in Belarus.
