The surgical team of the Clinic for Orthopaedics and Trauma at the University Clinical Centre of the Republic of Srpska successfully performed a complex surgical procedure involving the removal of a tumour. The procedure addressed a large, advanced, almost inoperable soft-tissue malignant tumour of the right upper leg, located in close proximity to major blood vessels and nerves. Due to the tumour’s location, there was a significant risk of leg amputation. Thanks to the timely and highly professional intervention of the surgical team, amputation was avoided, the tumour was completely removed, and the patient is recovering well with continued therapy and medical follow-up. These tumours are increasingly prevalent, and patients often seek medical care at later stages of the disease, which further complicates treatment.
The benefits of this surgical procedure are multiple, as it allows the avoidance of amputation surgery and enables patients to return to their normal daily and professional activities.
The procedure was performed by a team led by Slavisa Kunarac, MD, specialist in Orthopaedics and Oncology. The surgical team was composed of Srdjan Macanovic, MD, Marko Cankovic, MD and Djordje Tontic, MD. The anaesthesiology team consisted of Dejan Nikic, MD and Iva Civljak, MD while the operating room nurse was Dajana Ilibasic.
