As the Prime Minister of Republic of Srpska, Mr. Dodik and Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Srpska, prof. Dr. Ranko Škrbić have announced, during their visit to the Centre for radiotherapy on 20th of March 2010, the first treatment of patients with radiotherapy in Banja Luka will be done on August, the 2nd, 2010.

Centre for radiotherapy, that in under building by the company Euromedic International as part of the Clinical Center of Banja Luka on the principle of Public-Private Partnership, is in the final stages of construction and furnishing. Mr. Marijan Bilić, General Manager of Euromedic in Bosnia and Herzegovina, says that they currently work on the arrangement of the interior of the Centre and set the equipment that will serve the purpose of treatment.

Treatment with teletherapy will be done in two linear accelerator manufacturer Varian Medical Systems in bunkers specially designed for this purpose with a special protective doors, while the brachytherapy treatment will be performed in a separate bunker on the device GammaMed, the same manufacturer. This equipment is currently at the stage of installation, testing and acceptance, and on that work experts from the company Varian Medical Systems in collaboration with staff of the Centre for radiotherapy. During installation, the staff of the Center for radiation will pass through training, so they could use the equipment, and on fifth of July 2010, will begin on-site application training during which all medical workers from the Center will get detailed instructions on how to use the equipment. In the meantime, we made a part of specialized training in abroad for medical physicists and IT engineers in Switzerland and Germany, and the second part of training in the U.S.A, Switzerland and Hungary is planned in the future.

The rest of the equipment needed for the simulation of treatment is also under mounting – General Electric engineers set LightSpeed CT simulator 16 and C-arm, and training for the management of these devices will be held in July. At the same time will be installed a second simulator, Acuity of Varian Medical Systems company, which will further serve the purpose of verification of the treatment. By placing these two simulators that will work at the same time will be allowed a faster flow of patients and a shorter retention period in the simulation.
Exterior of the Center for radiotherapy and the entire South Wing of the CMB Clinical Center of Banja Luka is under the construction and runs according to the plan.
In addition to the final stages of construction and installation of equipment at the Centre, it is important to emphasize that we completed the selection of staff for the work of the Centre for radiotherapy and, by the end of July, they will do all required training and be certified to work on the aforementioned equipment, and so we have all the conditions to start the Center for radiotherapy work and to receive the first patient as announced.

Prof. Dr. Mirko Stanetić, Managing Director of the Clinical Center of Banja Luka, says the Centre for radiotherapy, as part of the Clinical Center of Banja Luka, will represent the most advanced center for radiation treatment of patients on the entire Balkan, and will provide to patients from RS and BiH possibility of treatment in the country, but also this center will be of great importance for patients outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina. What is most important with the work of the Centre for radiotherapy, patients with malignant diseases will be provided timely and with efficient treatment of all modern therapeutic modalities. The previous practice of waiting for radiation therapy with a long list of appointments in other areas should become history.
