On June 29th, 2014, in the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), the team of Professor Andreas Zuckermann performed a heart transplant in a patient named Sandra Švorcan (aged 23) from Bileća. Sandra was treated since her birth, due to the congenital heart defect. Over the past several years, all the modalities in treatment of a terminal stadium of cardiac insufficiency were exhausted. The new heart i.e. transplant was the only salvation.
Complete preparation and coordination for the heart transplant were done in the Clinical Centre Banja Luka and they represent a continuation of cooperation between our institution and Vienna General Hospital. The cooperation and a friendship between our institution and the team of Professor Zuckermann were initiated in 2008 when Boris Goronja M.D. went to Vienna and started his specialist training under the mentorship of Professor Zuckermann. In the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), up to now, cardiac transplants were performed in our 7 patients, while several patients need to be added to the transplant waiting list.
