Since 2009, The Clinic of Traumatology of the Clinical Centre Banja Luka performs its activities as an independent organizational unit. There is no rest for the physicians of the Clinic of Traumatology, since they are managing patients with severe injuries, extremity fractures and spinal fractures. Within the Clinic of Traumatology there is the Spinal Centre in which patients with the most complicated spinal injuries and injuries of locomotive system are treated. Degenerative diseases are treated and managed, including congenital diseases and also the conditions which occur as consequences of oldness i.e. fitting the patients with artificial hips and other implant material. The Clinic of Traumatology comprises of the Spinal Department and the General Traumatology.
During 2013, 690 regular and 276 urgent surgical procedures were performed, as well as 11 241 examinations in the outpatient department. During the same period, 278 ultrasound examinations were performed (ultrasound screening of children’s hips using the Graph’s method and ultrasound examinations of locomotive system). In the first quarter of 2014, 154 regular and 73 urgent surgical procedures were performed. During the same period 2621 examinations in the outpatient department were performed. Up to now, physicians performed 159 surgical procedures using the Ilizarov method. The method was named after Gavril Abramovich Ilizarov who designed the device and implemented its application in treating severe open and closed fractures, non-united fractures, bone defects, bone infections, congenital bone deformities, bone lengthening and other bone deformities. Surgical treatments of pseudoarthrosis and bone defects were mostly performed up to now. During 2010, for the first time in the Clinical Centre Banja Luka, the most complex surgical procedure which successfully treated deformity and lower leg extension in the length of 7,5 cm were performed in a patient with ahondroplasia (congenital disorder which is the most common cause of dwarfism). The surgery was performed by Marinko Domuzin MD, an orthopedic specialist, with the assistance of Milorad Maran MD, Darijo Kalacun MD, Sanjin Perišić MD and a surgical technician Goran Tomašević. An anaesthesiology team was comprised of Slobodanka Todorović MD and Dragan Milošević MD and an anaesthetic technician Boško Dragišić. During 2011, a surgery of deformity of sabre tibia was successfully performed. During 2012, a boy was successfully treated for a deformity of lower leg and the extension of 7 cm was also performed in the same procedure, due to Vitamin D- resistant rickets.
In the beginning of 2014, the same patient was successfully surgically treated for a deformity of upper leg and the extension of 7,5 cm was performed. The surgical procedure was performed by Marinko Domuzin MD with the assistance of Milorad Maran MD, Vladan Tomanić MD and a surgical technician Goran Tomašević. Dragan Milošević MD was at the head of the anaesthesiology team, together with an anaesthetic technician Ljubinka Dvorančić. In the last two months, resections of pseudoarthrosis and compensations of defects of 5, 4 and 3,5 cm were performed in three patients during the same surgical procedures. After surgical procedure, early rehabilitation is performed under the monitoring of Jadranka Nuić Skenderija MD. Accordingly, contractures and muscle hypertrophy that can occur after every extremity surgery are avoided. An average duration of the device support is three to four months depending on the type of surgical procedure. The Clinical Centre Banja Luka introduced this method in 1992 when Professor V.I. Ševcov, who was a student of Professor Ilizarov, visited our institution. First independent surgical procedures were performed by Predrag Grubor MD. During 2000, Marinko Domuzin MD became involved in these surgical procedures. Eight years later, he attended special education in the Ilizarov Scientific Centre in Kurgan. After education, together with his colleage Milorad Maran MD, Marinko Domuzin MD started to perform very complex surgical procedures which were not performed in the Clinical Centre Banja Luka until then.
