Patients with the most complicated ophthalmic problems from all over the Republic of Srpska are treated in the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Clinical Centre Banja Luka.

The Ophthalmology Clinic of the Clinical Centre Banjaluka is a reference centre for medical retina in which the largest number of sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the patients with posterior eye segment diseases, vascular eye diseases and macular degeneration from all over the Republic of Srpska are performed. Procurement of a modern diode laser, cameras used in fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography device for the Centre for Medical Retina provides performing of diagnostic procedures and treatment of numerous patients with posterior eye segment diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, vascular eye diseases, macular degenerations, neuro-ophthalmology diseases. Centre for Medical Retina comprises of Medical Retina Service, Service for Laser Interventions, Service for Fluorescein Angiography and Optical Coherence Tomography in which 90-100 patients suffering from these diseases are treated on a daily basis. It means that 3450 examinations, approximately 2000 laser interventions, 2800 OCT techniques, 2400 fluorescein angiography procedures and fundus photographs are performed annually. It is a unique centre of this type, a reference centre in Bosnia and Herzegovina which is recognized among ophthalmologists and patients in the region and which offers specific types of diagnostic procedures in ophthalmology and treatment of fundus oculi and optic nerve disorders. Almost 90 % of cataract surgeries in the Republic of Srpska are performed in the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Clinical Centre Banjaluka.

A contemporary ultrasound method of cataract surgery, so called facoemulsification is applied in 95 % of cataract surgeries in our Clinic. It is known among people as “laser surgery of cataract” and when it comes to its application, physicians of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Clinical Centre Banjaluka are leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This kind of cataract surgery includes small incision and provides seamless procedure, shorter patients’ stay and surgical treatments of this frequent disease in outpatient departments. Accordingly, better functional results and faster postoperative recovery are achieved. Achieving a better postoperative sharpness of vision is a main goal. On an annual basis, physicians of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Clinical Centre Banja Luka approximately perform 2000 cataract surgeries, more than 500 complex strabismus surgeries, glaucoma surgeries and vitreoretinal surgeries, oculoplastic surgical procedures, successful treatments of complex and severe eye injuries and approximately 2000 laser interventions on anterior and posterior eye segment. Procurement of a modern device for retinal tomography – Heidelberg Retina Tomography (HRT III) offers 3 D demonstration of papilla (optic nerve head) which provides us with significant data on presence and progression of glaucoma. On an annual basis, more than 5500 patients are examined and observed in Glaucoma Service and HRT III analyses are performed in 950 patients. Annually, Ultrasound Examination Cabinet performs more than 3600 ultrasound examinations of eye and orbit. Contact Lens Service performs 200 examinations on an annual basis. Strabismus Service performs more than 2000 strabological examinations and orthopleoptic treatments. Visual Field Service performs more than 1500 analyses of visual field. Vitreoretinal Surgery Service performs approximately 1000 examinations of patients with complicated cases of vitreoretinal pathology. Annually, physicians of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Clinical Centre perform examinations in 1600 patients who suffer from other non-ocular pathology and who are referred to the Ophthalmology Clinic from other clinics of the CCBL. Also, 450 examinations are done by consulting bodies.
