World Week of Breast Feeding is being traditionally marked in the first week of August, with the goal to raise awareness on importance of the advantages of breast feeding, both for the mother and for the baby. The marking activities also have a goal to provide support for breast feeding, and to improve protection of the health of the mothers and babies. On that occasion, the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics was visited by RS Deputy minister of Health and Social Protection Doctor Amela Lolic.
Doctor Lolic met with the Director of University Hospital of Banja Luka Clinic Centre Professor Mirko Stanetic and personnel of the Hospital, and they jointly visited newborn children and mothers in the Hospital. “Mother’s milk is top healthy food, medicament and love. That is the best choice for the baby, since the mother’s milk protects the children from infections. Percent of mothers who understand importance of mother’s milk for newborns is significantly going up since after reception in the hospital, we explain them the importance of breast feeding for their babies. It is necessary to underline that mothers have a lot of information from the internet, so it is also important and useful for them. We advice the mothers to do breast feeding in the first six months, with suggestion that the baby does not need any other food in the first four months. If the mother has enough milk it is good to do it in one-year or year-and-half period. There is no limit on the number of feedings during the day, in the period of this type of feeding”, said Doctor Ljubomir Visekruna, Specialist for Pediatric Medicine.
“In a year, over 3,000 new mothers successfully give births in our Clinics and after 2007, we implement the Project “The Friends of Babies”, in cooperation with RS Ministry of Health and Social Protection and World Health Organization. The Project means that the baby is automatically located near the mother, and it is good from psychological point of view, for both of them. Very rarely mothers are unable to do breast feeding, and it only happens in extraordinary situations then there is some medical problem which prevents them to do it”, said Head of the Clinic for Ginecology and Obstetrics in the University Hospital of Banja Luka Clinic Centre Sasa Savic. “World Week of Breast Feeding is being marked this year under the slogan “Breast feeding – winning goal for the life”, in accordance with the World Football Championship which takes place this year. Medical workers constantly work with the women and advice them on importance of this type of feeding. They also help them to learn the techniques of such feeding and to realize importance of that for their babies”, said RS Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection Amela Lolic.
