On October 14th and 15th, a modern research microscope – ECLIPSE Ni series manufactured by NIKON was installed in the Institute of Pathology. Mr. Dusan Kadlec, a Nikon representative, installed the operating system and conducted a training of potential users of the microscope. Investment amount is approximately BAM 130.000,00. The investment was made with the assistance of the Faculty of Medicine in Banja Luka.
A procurement procedure was initiated with the aim of improvement of diagnostics of pathological conditions in cells and tissues on the basis of alterations in the structure of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA): mutations and deletions in the structure of genes, gene amplification, translocations and inversions of genes on chromosomes.
The application of this sophisticated device in our institution will ensure:
- raising the quality of services in pathohistological, haematologicaland cytogenetic diagnostics,
- adequacy of application of targeted therapy in oncology patients with HER2-positive breast cancersand ALK–positive lung adenocarcinomas. FISH techniques are considered to be the gold standards for detection of the above mentioned mutations,
- improvement of diagnostic methods and presentation of results of chromosomal aberrations both in foetuses and in other patients in whom cytogenetic analyses are performed,
- enhancing the reputation and prestige of the University Hospital Clinical Centre Banja Luka with regard to application of the latest state-of-the-art diagnostic methods,
- financial savings by solving the diagnostic dilemmas without necessity for referring the patients to other health care institutions,
- possibility to provide diagnostic services to the regional health care institutions that do not posses this kind of medical equipment,
- possibility to educate biologists and histologists from the Faculty of Medicine in Banja Luka and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics with the purpose of conducting the scientific research.
