IMG_1582Diabetes is a prevailing health problem. It has spread worldwide with devastating human, social and economic consequences. On November 14th, 2014, World Diabetes Day was marked in the Paediatric Clinic.

A part of celebration in the University Hospital Clinical Centre Banja Luka was socializing with eighty children with diabetes which was organized by the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology of the Paediatric Clinic. Gathering took place on November 14th, 2014 in the Amphitheatre of the Maternity Building from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

On that occasion, the lecture related to the use of insulin-pump therapy in children with diabetes was held. Lecturers were endocrinologists from the Paediatric Clinic: Primarius Gordana Bukara MD, PhD and Vesna Miljkovic, MD, a subspecialist in paediatric endocrinology. Following the lecture, gathering and snack for the children and their parents were planned to be arranged. Diabetes that occurs in childhood is a huge emotional and psychosocial stress for children suffering from the disease and their families. Accordingly, it was possible for our youngest patients and their parents to be provided with all necessary information on prevention, first signs of the disease and treatment.

Signs of early diabetes are: frequent urination, excessive thirst, increased appetite, weight loss, tiredness, lethargy, weakness. Advanced diabetes symptoms are abdominal pain, dehydration, rapid breathing and coma. Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases that are mainly characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia that occurs due to insulin secretion disorder, disorder of its effect or due to both of them.
