Association of Neurologists of the Republic of Srpska and the Neurology Clinic of the University Hospital Clinical Centre Banja Luka are marking the Global Day of Epilepsy Awareness. Epilepsy is one of the most common diseases or a central nervous system disorder. Marking of this day is aimed at reducing the prejudices towards people suffering from epilepsy.
On that occasion, at the Krajina Square in Banjaluka, on Thursday, March 26th, 2015, in the period from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., a stand with promotional leaflets in relation to this disease will be installed and medical personnel will provide educational information to the interested citizens in order to raise awareness and inform public on problems that people suffering from this disease are facing.
The Department of Neurophysiology is an organizational unit of the Neurology Clinic and it deals with diagnosing and treatment of people suffering from epilepsy. Annually, approximately 500 patients from the entire Republic of Republic of Srpska visit the Department of Neurophysiology. These patients are able to undergo the most modern diagnostic procedures that are available to us. Medications that are used worldwide for treating epilepsy are available as well. Also, cooperation with reference epileptology centres in the region was established. In this way, a successful treatment of the most demanding patients who have to undergo surgeries is provided. Total number of people suffering from epilepsy in the Republic of Srpska is approximately 7.500. Annually, from 600 to 800 new cases are registered. The aim is to establish cause of the disease in all patients. It enables application of targeted therapy. Great attention is paid to treatment of all comorbid conditions. Accordingly, quality of life of these patients is improved.
