UntitledOn an annual basis, in the Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the University Hospital Clinical Centre Banja Luka, 3000 babies are born. Nine midwives are employed at the Maternity Ward and they are maximally dedicated to the hospitalized women in their hardest and most beautiful moments in life. In the Maternity Unit with Puerperium and Neonatology, all kinds of deliveries are performed and all complications occurring during deliveries are managed. In this regard, a role that a midwife plays is immeasurable. International Day of the Midwife represents support to all midwives worldwide in order for them to celebrate their profession. Midwives assist in developing a healthy family because they hold the key to the future of a healthy family. International Day of the Midwife has been marked since 1992, with the aim of promoting this profession through various types of activities and exchanging the examples of good practice. The aim is also to improve the health of citizens through improvement of activities of midwives. Worldwide, midwives help in creating better health, in strengthening structure of a family and community.

Profession of midwives carries a great responsibility i.e. healthy pregnancy, safety of giving birth, support of one woman to another, support of a woman to a family and to the community. According to data of the Association of Nursing and Obstetrics of the Republic of Srpska, there are 32 midwives per 100 000 citizens in the Republic of Srpska. It’s important to emphasize that a midwife is not besides a woman only while she is giving birth, because within organized health care, a midwife provides support to a woman during pregnancy and also during first weeks after the delivery.
