Within the educational trainings for independent performing of laparoscopic surgeries, under the mentorship of Branko Cvjeticanin, MD from the University Clinical Centre Ljubljana, physicians of the Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics performed laparoscopic-assisted radical hysterectomy for the first time.
This procedure is a gold standard for treatment of early stages of cervical cancer (FIGO I B1-II A). First laparoscopic-assisted radical hysterectomy was performed by Querlou in 1991. After that, this surgical procedure became a routine in numerous gynaecological oncology centres.
The aim of introducing the new surgical procedure is achieving the most successful treatment with minimum of complications. Accordingly, the loss of blood is reduced, a patient feels less pain, hospital stay is shorter, quantities of used surgical supplies are reduced, patients recover in shorter time period and incidence of complications is reduced. Laparoscopic-assisted radical hysterectomy should become routine surgery in our Clinic and should replace more invasive surgical procedures.
The surgical procedure was performed without any complications. By performing complex surgical procedures, once again we confirmed our willingness to be on equal ground with reputable gynaecology institutions in the region which successfully perform this kind of surgical procedure.
Team of physicians of the Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics that undergoes educational trainings on laparoscopic procedures under the mentorship of Primarius Branko Cvjeticanin, MD is composed of Miroslav Popovic, MD, MSc and Andrija Banicevic, MD from Gynaecological-oncology Department with Semi-intensive care.
