Team of surgeons from the Clinic of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery of the UCC RS together with the team of surgeons from the MMA Belgrade for the first time performed complicated surgical procedure i.e. reconstruction of defect of lower jaw after removal of advanced tumour of bone tissue of lower jaw – mandible. Reconstruction is performed by microsurgical transfer of vascularised bone flap from the lower leg in order to create a new lower jaw.
This procedure represents the most complicated surgical procedure in the field of microvascular and reconstructive surgery which is for the first time performed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Taking into account the complexity of the surgical procedure, besides exceptional expertise, it is necessary that skilled and prepared medical staff members work as team. Possible unwanted complications are flap necrosis and all early postoperative complications, for example infection, bleeding, inadequate postoperative scar etc.
Introducing this complicated surgical procedure is of utmost importance for the University Clinical Centre of the Republic of Srpska since accordingly it becomes one of the several health care institutions in the region that deal with microsurgery and in which this surgical procedure can be performed. Significance for patients of the UCC RS is reflected by the fact that they will no longer be referred to other health care centres in the region in order to undergo these complicated procedures.
