For the first time in the Republic of Srpska, team of surgeons at the Orthopaedic Clinic of the UCC RS performed stabilization of intertrochanteric fracture of the femur by intramedullary fixation with the proximal femoral nail. It is a modern technique that is used worldwide and from now on it will be applied in the Orthopaedic Clinic and the Clinic of Traumatology of the UCC RS.

This type of fracture is characteristic for elderly people suffering from osteoporosis and it represents a global health problem. An aggravating circumstance is the fact that this population besides osteoporosis usually suffers from other diseases. These people have more or less disturbed motor skills which additionally make rehabilitation more difficult.

The advantages of this method are minimally invasive surgical technique with minimal blood loss, shortened duration of surgical procedure, decrease in number of postoperative complications, shorter hospital stay and better functional results. People recover in significantly shorter time period and return to their everyday activities. The surgical procedure is performed under the X-Ray guidance without opening the fractured area.

Complex surgical procedure was performed by: Dejan Curlik MD, Vladimir Andjic MD Nemanja Tomic MD, Dragan Svraka, specialist in anaesthesia and Jelica Ristic, theatre nurse.
